Social Enterprise at the University of Northampton

In 2010, the University of Northampton set a strategic goal to be Britain’s leading university for social enterprise by 2015. In 2013, the world’s leading network of social entrepreneurs, Ashoka U, recognised our commitment to social enterprise by awarding the university the international title of ‘Changemaker Campus’. We are proud to be the first institution in Europe to have achieved ‘Changemaker’ status.

    Our three clear values

At the University of Northampton, we define social enterprise as using market disciplines to achieve a social outcome which is driven by social values. Our social enterprise work is founded on the following three, clearly delineated values:

1. High quality student experience

We are committed to providing a unique, high-quality student experience which supports the entrepreneurs of the futures’ development of both theoretical and practical expertise.

2. Entrepreneurial skill development

We encourage, support and develop entrepreneurial skills and enterprising attitudes among our students, staff, and the communities with whom we work.

3. Increased inclusivity

We strive to create a fairer and more inclusive society.

    We strive to create a fairer and more inclusive society.

As a university community, we strive to embed seven key initiatives relating to social enterprise into our day-to-day operation. These initiatives comprise:

  1. Providing a unique student experience founded on our ‘Changemaker’ status;
  2. Integrating social enterprise with teaching and research;
  3. Promoting nationwide support for social enterprise;
  4. Investing in social enterprise opportunities for our students;
  5. Proactively developing our support services and, where possible, running them as social enterprises;
  6. Promoting a fairer, more just society for all, and
  7. Influencing policy and practice to improve social enterprise in the UK and beyond.

By upholding these seven social enterprise initiatives, we provide our students with the opportunity to develop advanced entrepreneurial skills which will not only aid their development as young professionals but will also place them in a strong position within the competitive global employment market.
